Orangutan Reintroduction Program

The East Kalimantan Orangutan Reintroduction Program at Samboja Lestari was the first orangutan reintroduction program established by the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation in 1991, specifically to provide care and rehabilitation for displaced or orphaned orangutans rescued from areas of habitat loss.

Formally known as Wanariset, the project was relocated in 2006, due to insufficient space and was renamed Samboja Lestari. The program is currently located about 38 kilometers from Balikpapan, in East Kalimantan and we work in collaboration with the East Kalimantan Conservation and Natural Resources Authority (BKSDA), an executive technical unit of the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry. The land at Samboja Lestari is owned by the BOS Foundation and is the location of our forest rehabilitation program. Our main activities at Samboja Lestari include orangutan rescue, translocation of orangutans from areas of conflict to areas of secure and protected habitat, the provision of welfare and healthcare, rehabilitation, reintroduction and forest restoration activities. In addition to orangutan rehabilitation and reintroduction, we manage sunbear sanctuary at Samboja Lestari, with around 50 sunbears currently under in our care. Conservation of habitat and wildlife can only be achieved by working together with local communities and other stakeholders, hence in all areas of our work we engage with local communities and schools on community development activities and outreach conservation education.

The BOS Foundation has rescued hundreds of orangutans in East Kalimantan and currently cares for and supports over 200 orangutans at Samboja Lestari.

Orangutan Rescue and Release

Orangutans that have been displaced from areas of natural habitat due to human development activities causing widespread habitat loss, are often forced to range long distances in search of food. Often they wander into oil palm plantations or community gardens as they simply have no other alternative. Together with BKSDA, we rescue orangutans from these situations and if healthy, can immediately release them to areas of safe, secure natural habitat. This practice is commonly known as translocation. In situations where an orangutan has suffered injury or illness, we provide dedicated healthcare to ensure their recovery for future translocation or later reintroduction.

Orangutan Rehabilitation and Reintroduction

The BOS Foundation manages two reintroduction programs; Nyaru Menteng in Central Kalimantan and Samboja Lestari in East Kalimantan. Both of these programs focus on rehabilitation and reintroduction activities in line with national and international (IUCN) guidelines and criteria. When an infant orangutan is taken away from its mother, he or she loses a whole life time of early learning. Therefore, the purpose of rehabilitation is to equip orphaned orangutans with the skills they need to survive once they are old enough to be reintroduced to the forest.

THE PROCESS OF REHABILITATION

Healthcare and Quarantine

Each orangutan arriving at one of our reintroduction programs goes through routine quarantine procedures and health checks (physcial and psychological). This is very important as many rescued orangutans have been exposed to human diseases which they would not normally encounter in the wild.

Rehabilitation

The majority of the orangutans who enter our facilities are still very young, so in need of orangutan-peer interaction and daily lessons on forest survival. During rehabilitation, orangutans are taught and encouraged to build nests, select appropriate natural foods and recognise natural predators. This process starts in ‘Baby School’ and progresses through different levels of ‘Forest School’, where each day is spent in the forest learning new skills. Skills aquired by each individual are assessed before moving them up through the levels. Orangutans then progress to a Healthy Quarantine or to Forest School Level 3, which is a halfway forest for the final stage of rehabilitation. Dependent on the age and existing skills each orangutan has, rehabilitation can take up to 7 years.

Reintroduction

Our overriding goal is to reintroduce orangutans back to secure natural habitat to establish new viable long-term populations to bolster conservation of the species in the wild. Run by RHOI (Indonesian Orangutan Habitat Restoration), a company established by the BOS Foundation for the purpose of obtaining Ecosystem Restoration Concessions, the forest areas we have secured for our reintroduction program in East Kalimantan are established with camps, equipment and trained personnel to ensure that our Orangutan Field Monitoring Programs are able to continuously monitor each orangutan’s adaptation to their natural habitat. This involves a great deal of ongoing logistical support, planning and is very costly. You can support our Release Programs through your donations.

Long-term Sanctuary

Very sadly some of our orangutans can never be returned to the wild due to illness or injury. Our dedicated team continues to provide welfare and healthcare to these individuals, which they will need for the rest of their lives. An orangutan can live for 50 years in captivity and we will ensure that we continue to provide them with the highest level of long-term care and sanctuary.

Conservation Program

The Mawas Conservation Program is a BOS Foundation program protecting 309,000 hectares of natural habitat for wild orangutans. Administratively, Mawas encompasses two main districts — South Barito and Kapuas districts — as well as five sub-districts and 53 villages with a population of 29,000 families. The Mawas peatland also sustains one of the largest remaining orangutan populations with an estimated 3,000 orangutans inhabiting the area.

The Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) is an endangered species and protected by law. The Mawas Conservation Program plays a very important role in the conservation of this species of orangutan and its habitat, as well as in the conservation of more general biodiversity, environment and local community development.

The benefits of Mawas Conservation Program include:

  • Helping to decrease the world’s greenhouse gas emission effects.
  • Raising international awareness  on endangered species and their long-term conservation in natural habitat.
  • Positive economical influence for the communities residing in and around Mawas.
  • Implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Agenda 21 (climate change, sustainable bussiness development etc.), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), and Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
  • Providing opportunities for local government staff to obtain scholarships (local and international) by conducting research in Mawas.

Forest Restoration

The BOS Foundation is all too acutely aware that there is no future for orangutans without protection of their natural habitat.  The BOS Foundation manage several habitat rehabilitation and protection programs through forest and natural resources management, which are designed to not only restore and safeguard critical land, but also to employ and encourage local communities to participate in eco-friendly sustainable activities.

Community Education

The BOS Foundation actively organises many education and information sharing programs, whether in big cities or in areas surrounding our facilities. Education is an important means of communication with local and international communities, to increase understanding on the importance of  preserving wild animals and habitats. School visits and programs, awareness campaigns, expos, workshops, teacher training and book publication are just some of the efforts the BOS Foundation has made to improve awareness and knowledge on orangutan ecology and conservation.

Aside from education programs, the BOS Foundation has developed, and continues to develop, relationships with national and international environmental organisations to help support the orangutan’s plight. The BOS Foundation was involved in the development of Indonesian Orangutan Conservation Strategy and Action Plan 2007-2017 and continues to implement the plan, the core target of which is to stabilize orangutan populations and habitats between 2007 and 2017.

Community Empowerment

The BOS Foundation conducts many activities designed to increase the skills and capabilities in local communities, khususnya the sustainable management of natural resources, to ultimately empower them to develop their own economies, use the forest wisely and reduce local pressures on conservation areas.

Habitat Restoration Program

RHOI (Restorasi Habitat Orangutan Indonesia, which translates as Indonesian Orangutan Habitat Restoration) is an independent organization established by the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation in 2009.

The sole purpose of the organization is to provide a permanent safe, sufficient forest site for wild or semi-wild, and rehabilitated Bornean orangutans where they can live in freedom, and establish a new, viable wild population to bolster conservation of this endangered species.

Suitable Forests for Orangutan Reintroduction

Rehabilitated orangutans, while self-sufficient, can rarely be as forest-competent as the wild orangutans who have spent all their lives in the forest. Strict national and international (IUCN) criteria exist for orangutan reintroduction, which our programs follow. These include:

  1. Orangutans must be reintroduced into an area with either no or a low (non viable) population of existing wild orangutans (0.1 individual per square-kilometer), within their historic range.
  2. The forest must be suitable lowland forest (up to 900 m-asl); unfortunately most remaining healthy forests in Indonesia now only exist in higher altitude areas due to land conversion and forest degradation.
  3. The forest must be secure; not in danger of imminent threats of conversion and as far away as possible from human settlements, yet accessible for the team to conduct the actual reintroduction and post-release monitoring.
  4. Subspecies appropriate locations – meaning East Kalimantan orangutans cannot be released in Central Kalimantan or other forests outside East Kalimantan. Central Kalimantan orangutans cannot be released in West Kalimantan etc. To ensure this, the release candidates must also go through DNA tests to determine subspecies.

Finding a suitable forest as habitat for orangutans has always been the biggest challenge. In reality, orangutan habitat restoration and rehabilitation are laborious and costly activities. Both RHOI and the BOS Foundation need to secure sufficient funds and more land, to ensure long-term success.

Forests Forever for Orangutans

To realise our vision for RHOI we required a business license for the Utilization of Forest Timber Products through Restoration of the Ecosystem (IUPHHK-RE), also known as an Ecosystem Restoration Concession (ERC). This process was required, due to the fact that since 2002 the BOS Foundation’s orangutan rehabilitation centers in Nyaru Menteng and Samboja Lestari had been unable to reintroduce orangutans into the wild due to the challenges of securing suitable and safe forest areas. (For a forest to be allocated as a suitable release site it has to meet the both national and international standards in quality, carrying capacity and long-term security). As a non-profit organization the BOS Foundation is not allowed to apply for this license, due to government regulations. Hence, RHOI was established.

On August 18, 2010, RHOI was issued an ERC permit, giving them the authority to use and manage 86,450 hectares of rainforest and provide a sustainable and secure habitat for orangutans for at least 60 years, with the option of extending for another 35 years. Issued by the Ministry of Forestry, this ERC license cost around US$1.4 million, which was funded by generous donations from donors and BOS Foundation partners organizations in Europe, Australia and the USA.

RHOI named this forest Kehje Sewen, which translates as ‘orangutan’ in the local Dayak Wehea dielect. By name and nature, the Kehje Sewen Forest became a forest for orangutans.

RHOI is also currently in the process of applying for a concession license in Central Kalimantan to address occupancy challenges in the orangutan rehabilitation center in Nyaru Menteng, as well as a license to expand the Kehje Sewen Forest in order to meet the needs of our orangutan reintroduction program at Samboja Lestari in East Kalimantan.

Sustainable Forest Management and Community Involvement

In addition to providing a home for orangutans, RHOI also undertakes general sustainable forest management activities such as restoration, rehabilitation, environmental management and long-term habitat protection. They also encourage and support local community involvement and empowerment through partnerships, forest education and training, research and development, and trading (goods and services for sustainable non-timber forest products) for domestic and international markets.

These are all important steps for RHOI and the BOS Foundation in their commitment to creating a brighter future for orangutans and supporting worldwide efforts to combat the serious threats of global warming and climate change.

Question and Answer

Orangutans live in the forest of Sumatra and Kalimantan (Borneo). These are the ONLY places in the world where orangutans live. Orangutans live mainly on trees and only occasionally come down to the ground.

Their main food is fruit (60%) Young leaves (25%) Flowers and bark (10%) Insects, mainly ants, termites and crickets (5%) And the occasional egg. Q: What do orangutans NOT eat? Meat and fish. They eat eggs but not birds and no other animals.

No, they are active during daylight and rest during the night.

In the wild, their average lifespan is 45-50 years. They have been known to live longer up to 65 years in captivity.

They “squeak” to communicate. Infants cry like a baby, and young ones scream and throw tantrums. Older orangutans make a long noise (over 1 minute) that sounds like “grumph”. It can be heard 300 metres in the forest. The adult males inflate their throat pouch and make a long call. This is a loud, pitched roaring that carries up to a kilometre in the forest.

An infant weighs around half a kilo at birth. Adult females grow to 1.3 metres in height and can weigh 45kg. Males can sometimes reach 1.8 metres in height and can weigh over 120kg.

Adult males are much bigger than females. As well as the size, the face changes dramatically as he gets older. He grows beard and moustache. The strongest (sexually dominant) male gets wide cheek pads and a throat pouch under his chin.

Usually only one infant, very rarely are twins born, they are pregnant the same length of time as humans, nearly 9 months.

Orangutan infants stay with their mother until they are about 6 or 7 years old. They receive breast milk for the first three years of their life but also learn to eat other foods. The mother teaches them everything about survival in the forest. They share a very close relationship.

No, as adults they spend most of the time on their own. Babies and children stay together with their mother. However mothers and young orangutans do meet up and the infants play together.

Females can start having babies between 9 and 12 years old. Male orangutans start between the ages of 9 and 15 years. After that he will grow his beard and moustache. Cheek pad and throat pouch may not appear until he is older than 20 years and might not grow at all.

They have the nests for only short time stay.

They sleep in their nests, usually a new one made in the evening. The nests are woven in a branch of a tree from broken tree branches and leaves, often very well crafted, like a big basket. Sometimes the nests can be more than a metre across. Orangutans also build nest in the daytime to rest and play in; a mother with young children might build 2 or 3 nests a day. A mother also uses a nest to give birth in.

Normally no, sometimes in captivity they can become aggressive as a result of how they are treated. They are up to 6 times stronger than humans and have 4 strong hands and can bite hard. Usually they are very peaceful animals. If an adult male meets another, they will try and avoid a fight by giving threat displays and staring at each other. If this does not work then they may fight.

Yes, only a few – primarily humans! Previously, the clouded leopard and the Sumatran tigers were their natural predators but humans have killed most of them too!

Rehabilitation centres are set up to accommodate confiscated or donated pet orangutans. The aim is to guide and teach apes to return to their habitat. Many orangutans have already been successfully returned and released back in the wild.

Firstly, we are destroying their forests. Secondly, they reproduce very slowly. A female will only give birth every 6 – 7 years in the wild. Thirdly, we are hunting them for meat, to sell as pets and ornamentation.

Orangutans Fact

Overview

Common Name Scientific Name  Population Estimates Status
Bornean Orangutan Pongo pygmaeus 55,000 Critically Endangered
Sumatran Orangutan Pongo abelii 14,800 Critically Endangered

The orangutan is the only member of the great ape family found in Asia. All other members of the great ape family are located in Africa; chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), gorilla (Gorilla gorilla and Gorilla beringei), and bonobo (Pan paniscus). There are two species of orangutan, the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) distributed across the island of Borneo in Indonesia (Kalimantan) and Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak, and the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) situated on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The two species have been geographically separated for at least 8,000 years when increased sea levels isolated the two islands. Based on scientific research investigating genetics, morphology, ecology, behaviour and life history, Sumatran and Bornean orangutans demonstrate significant differences (Delgado & van Schaik, 2000; Groves, 2001; Zhang et al., 2001). Overall physical characteristics

  • The Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) has a larger body size, and has dark or reddish brown short hair;
  • The Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) has a smaller body size, with brighter orange hair
  • In both species, male orangutans are much larger than the females, typically two to three times heavier.
  • Male orangutans develop large cheek pads (flanges) which develop post-sexual maturity

Bornean Orangutan

The Bornean orangutan is classified into 3 sub-species (Groves, 2001; Warren et al., 2001): Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus, ranging from northwest Kalimantan (including Betung Kerihun and Danau Sentarum National Parks) north of the Kapuas river, across the east of Sarawak state (Malaysia) Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii, ranging from south of Kapuas river in West Kalimantan to east of the Barito river in Central Kalimantan Pongo pygmaeus morio ranging throughout Sabah and East Kalimantan south to the Mahakam river.

Habitat and Behaviour

Bornean orangutans inhabit lowland tropical dry-land and swamp forests up to 500 m above sea-level, occasionally ranging higher or in degraded habitats. Orangutans are the largest arboreal animal, i.e. creatures that spend most of their time in the trees and complete their life-history in the trees. However orangutans, particularly males, do spend time foraging or travelling on the ground. Orangutans build a new sleeping platform, or ‘nest’, high in the trees each night by bending branches into a bowl and filling with foliage.

Diet

Orangutans are predominately frugivorous, with over 100 types of fruit typically recorded in their diet from any one site. However they have a very wide diet which includes flowers, leaves, the cambium layer of bark; the inner pith of rattans, pandans, gingers and palms; termites, ants and other invertebrates; honey, fungi and on very rare occasions have been observed to eat small mammals. They need to rely on these foods during periods of fruit-shortage and also develop large fat reserves to help them through extreme periods of food shortage, or ‘fruit-crunch periods. Orangutans are important dispersal agents of fruit seeds, either by passing seeds through their digestive tract or by carrying and discarding seeds as they move through the trees, thus playing a key role in forest ecology and regeneration.

Social Behaviour

Orangutans are essentially solitary with the only permanent bond being between mother and infant. However they do live in very loose clusters of related females, which occasionally meet in twos and sometimes more during periods of higher food-availability to allow bonds to be maintained, infants to play and learn together and novel behaviours to be shared. Males disperse away from their natal range to prevent inbreeding and become sexually mature at around 15 years of age. Between 18 and 20 years old they grow much larger and develop secondary sexual characteristics of cheek flanges and large throat sac, which they use to make booming long calls to attract females and warn-off other males. Males compete to become dominant, although non –dominant males do father a large proportion of infants, particularly unflanged males aged 15-20 who have not attained full size and are able to forcefully mate females. Female orangutans give birth to one infant at a time after 8 and a half months of pregnancy, and do not have another child until the first infant reaches seven years of age. This is the longest inter-birth interval known in the animal kingdom and enables the mother to give full attention to her offspring as it learns the skills needed to survive on its own, including making nests, recognising different kinds of food and avoiding predators. Once it has learnt these skills it still stays with its mother for protection and to make a mental map of the forest, particularly to learn where all the important food resources are, until it is time to move away. Orangutans are highly intelligent creatures with advanced problem-solving skills. They are able to make use of things in their environment for tools and medicines. They display cultural behaviours, with different populations tackling the same problem in different ways. They learn from other orangutans and pass on their own skills when they meet, which is more frequent when food availability is high. In artificial circumstances where food-availability is unlimited, such as in captivity or on the BOS Foundation’s pre-release islands, they can quickly develop and share very advanced skills, such as fishing, swimming with the use of a float or tool-use to efficiently access foods.

Conservation

The latest population estimate for Bornean orangutans derived at the International Population Habitat Viability Analysis (PHVA) Workshop in 2004, was approximately 55,000 individuals[MOU1] . At the same time it was noted that populations are decreasing at a rapid rate owing to (1) forest conversion, particularly for oil-palm plantations and other forms of agriculture; (2) other forms of forest loss, particularly forest fires in drained peatland areas; (3) forest degradation by illegal logging and (4) hunting of orangutans for food and capture for the pet-trade. Approximately one third of orangutans are found in conservation forests and the remainder are under severe threat. They are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and protected under Indonesian Law against any kind of persecution of them or their habitat. Nevertheless forest is still being cleared, logged or burnt and this has led to the death of many thousands of orangutans over the past decade and the displacement of many more. Some of these displaced orangutans have been rescued by Reintroduction Centres that aim to return them back to the wild once safe and secure forests are identified.

Orangutan Reintroduction Program?

The Central Kalimantan Orangutan Reintroduction Program at Nyaru Menteng was established in 1999, specifically to provide care and rehabilitation to displaced or orphaned orangutans rescued from areas of habitat loss through human development activities.

Located in Nyaru Menteng Arboretum, about 30 kilometers from downtown Palangka Raya, our main activities at Nyaru Menteng include orangutan rescue and translocation, the provision of welfare and healthcare, rehabilitation, and reintroduction. Conservation of habitat and wildlife can only be achieved by working together with local communities and other stakeholders, hence in all areas of our work we fully engage with local communities and schools on community development activities and outreach conservation education.

About Orangutans

The orangutan is Asia’s only great ape and is only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra

The orangutan is Asia’s only great ape and is only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra as two co-generic species, Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii.  The majority of orangutans (90%) are situated in Indonesia (Indonesian Borneo-Kalimantan and Sumatra), while the remaining 10% can be found in Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia.

As one of our closest living relatives orangutans are highly intelligent, sentinent beings. They are an iconic species of Indonesia and an important umbrella species. By protecting orangutans in their natural habitat, a whole plethora of other flora and fauna are also protected. Protecting their forest habitat is as important to humans as much as it is to wildlife.

Today

Today, both Bornean and Sumatran orangutans are threatened by extinction due to habitat. loss and hunting

It is estimated that the Bornean orangutan population has decreased by more than 80% within the last three generations. The World Conservation Union (IUCN Red Data List 2007) classifies both species of orangutan as Critically Endangered. Both species are also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Orangutans are legally protected by national and international law, however laws and regulations alone are clearly insufficient to actively protect this charismatic species. Orangutan conservation requires comprehensive and integrated efforts by all stakeholders, both in the field and in the political arena, to ensure its success.

In 2007, the first National Strategy and Action Plan for Orangutan Conservation 2007 – 2017 was signed by the Ministry of Forestry and announced by the Indonesian President at the Bali Climate Change Conference, December 2007. This plan is due to be reviewed and updated in the near future.

All orangutan conservation in Indonesia – including activities that we do at BOS Foundation – are based on this Action Plan.

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

As a new WordPress user, you should go to your dashboard to delete this page and create new pages for your content. Have fun!
